Water restrictions apply to everyone in the Lower Hunter and reducing our water consumption now will help us save water for our future supply. Changing a little can save a lot!

Water restrictions have been tightened in the Lower Hunter due to the impacts of the ongoing drought in our region and falling storage levels.

Level 1 restrictions apply to all businesses and residences in the Lower Hunter’s water supply network in Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Dungog and some parts of Singleton.

What’s excluded from restrictions?

There are some basic exclusions from water restrictions

  • Recycled water
  • Greywater (water from sinks, showers, washing machines etc.
  • Rainwater (provided the tank/dam is not topped up from, or switched to, the drinking water supply)
  • Bore water
  • Water used for firefighting, testing and related activities
What does it mean for you?

Every day:

  • All hoses must have a trigger nozzle
  • Wash vehicle or boat using a watering can or bucket only
  • Use a watering can or bucket
  • Repair dripping taps and leaking toilets as soon as possible

  • Aim for a 4 minute shower or the length of your favourite song
  • Wait for a full load before putting your washing on
  • Wash your veggies in a bucket and use this water on your indoor plants
